Como definiria o phrasal verb BARGAIN ON? Esse não dá para perceber logo de cara. Talvez conheçamos “bargain” mais como substantivo. Seu uso como verbo também está relacionado com assuntos comerciais.

Como de costume, iremos primeiro abordar seu significado isoladamente. A palavra “bargain” significa: 1 acordo comercial, contrato, ajuste. 2 compra ou oferta de ocasião. 3 comércio ou intercâmbio vantajoso, barganha, pechincha. vt+vi 1 pechinchar, regatear. 2 fazer bom negócio, chegar a um acordo. (Michaelis)

Mais uma vez, a preposição “on” ou “for” tem o sentido conectivo com aquilo que aponta o verbo.

Assim, o phrasal verb “bargain on” ou “bargain for” significa “esperar”, “confiar que algo aconteça”. Vejamos um exemplo:

I got more than I bargained for. [Recebi mais do que esperava.]

Vejamos como clarear mais seu uso e significado:

O Chamber Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs diz:

You bargain for something, or bargain on something happing, when you are expecting it or relying on it to happen. [Você bargain for algo, ou bargain on algo aconteça, quando você está esperando ou confiando que isso irá ocorrer] Ex.: We didn’t bargain on them changing their minds at the last minute. [same as reckon on]

O Cambridge International Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs diz:

To expect something to happen and be prepared for it. [Esperar que algo aconteça ou estar preparado para isso]
Ex.: Neither pilot had bargained for the hazards of the land that they were flying over. [usually negative]
Ex.: She hadn’t bargained on the house being sold so quickly.
Ex.: The strength of the opposition was rather more than she’d bargained for. (= more than she had expected)

O Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English explica:

bargain for sth
To expect that something will happen and make it part of your plans: [usually in negatives] [Esperar que algo aconteça e que faça parte de seus planos. (Normalmente em frases negativas)]
Ex.: They hadn’t bargained for such a dramatic change in the weather.

bargain on doing something
Ex.: I hadn’t bargained on being stuck in traffic on the way home.
Ex.: The thief got more than he bargained for, as Mr Cox tripped him up with his walking stick.

Uma coisa que fica claro analisando o dicionário de Longman, é que quando se refere à conjugação do verbo seguinte, como contar com que se faça algo, então usa-se a preposição “on” seguido de um verbo no infinitivo com ING, e quando se refere apenas à algo, usa-se a preposição “for”.
